Perian is a set of components (also known as plugins) for use with Mac OS X's included Quicktime media system. It it includes several different video and audio codecs, allowing for playback of several media formats otherwise not supported by Quicktime.

Supported Formats

In addition to the above formats, Perian enables Quicktime to play AVI video files that use a H.264 or Fraps video tracks and AAC, WMA, or Dolby Digital Surround audio tracks.

Players

Thanks to Perian plugging directly into Quicktime, any media player software that uses Quicktime will also take advantage of Perian. A list of such applications can be found at Quicktime Based Media Players.
